Le Chaman Diquís

A gold figure that can be worn as a pendant or a brooch. Paired spirals frame the face, while each hand holds a pointed object. At 53mm long and 11.15g, Le Chaman Diquís has a strong sculptural presence.

Heritage & provenance

Diquís, traditionally translated from Boruca as “great waters”, names an archaeological subregion in southern Costa Rica. It belonged to Greater Chiriquí, which extended into western Panama.

Goldworking became especially important there after about 800 CE. Cast human and animal figures appeared in ornaments associated with status, ceremonial dress and burial. Some combined human and animal traits; museum research links certain forms to ritual specialists and masks.

This design recalls Diquís and related Darién figures. Le Chaman Diquís is an interpretive name, and Costa Rica is a probable, undocumented attribution. This is a modern reproduction; no receipt or identifying mark links it to a particular workshop or country.

Craft & condition

A wide enhancer bail and fitted pin offer two ways to wear the piece. XRF testing produced a surface reading consistent with 14ct yellow gold. Light surface wear is visible.
