A gold figurine with a single green emerald. Spirals frame the head, the arms extend sideways and the legs form a narrow arch. The emerald sits below the feet, giving the figure its one point of colour.

What the form may reference

Frontal human and human-animal pendants were made across ancient Colombia and lower Central America. In those societies, gold ornaments could form part of high-status dress, ritual life, burial offerings and exchange. Their meaning depended on the community and the wearer.

The paired spiral forms and frontal stance of this pendant may echo that wider family of ancient American gold figures. The Met’s Tairona figure pendant shows how spirals, headdress and bodily transformation could appear in wearable gold. The Museo del Oro places such objects within the social and cultural lives of pre-Hispanic communities.

Probable provenance

The sourcing history points to Colombia, although no receipt, hallmark or maker’s mark confirms the country of manufacture. Gold, emerald and value

XRF testing produced a surface reading consistent with 9ct yellow gold. At 37.5% nominal fineness, the 2.28g gross weight gives a theoretical fine-gold equivalent of about 0.86g, before allowing for the emerald, setting, solder or other non-gold components.

The auction house described the stone as one round emerald of approximately 0.13ct. No independent gemstone report accompanies it. The asking price is AUD 425; future value is not guaranteed.
