Heritage & provenance

Known in China as the suanpan, the abacus has a long place in arithmetic and commerce. Its movable beads bring the working form of a calculating instrument into jewellery. Read the Smithsonian’s history of the Chinese abacus.

Chinese dragons have carried associations with water, protection, imperial authority and auspicious power. Here they frame the abacus, although the maker’s intended meaning is not recorded. The Met discusses the Chinese dragon as a benevolent bringer of rain and life.

The piece was recorded as made in China. No maker, workshop or production date is documented.
